"Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons" is an engraving by German artist Martin Schongauer, completed sometime between 1470 and 1475. This historic piece was ground breaking work in the medieval art world as it was one of the first engravings completed in metal as opposed to wood. The imaginative power used to illustrate the demons assault made this engraving famous throughout Europe. The grotesque devils are illustrated with a mix of body parts from different domains of the animal kingdom contributing wings, horns, fur, scales, beaks and claws to make up fiends who act with evil malice against the pious saint - now appearing on our sturdy market tote bags!
