Distinguished Colored Men - Vintage Art Print - Black History

Behold the glory of this rare piece "Distinguished Colored Men" of the Victorian Age, published by A. Muller & Co., New York, circa 1883. It celebrates notable African Americans showing head-and-shoulders portraits of Frederick Douglass, Robert Brown Elliott, Blanche K. Bruce, William Wells Brown, Md., Prof. R.T. Greener, Rt. Rev. Richard Allen, J.H. Rainey, E.D. Bassett, John Mercer Langston, P.B.S. Pinchback, and Henry Highland Garnet.

According to The Library Company of Philadelphias exhibit "The Genius of Freedom", this print came about at a time when African Americans in the North emphasized their racial pride and celebrated their new citizenship status by decorating their homes with inspirational pictures of black life and accomplishment. As the 19th century progressed, the parlor became an increasingly important symbol of middle- class respectability in the United States, and was a space for displaying a family’s identity as well as products of its material success. Technological advances meant prints were easily reproduced, making them affordable and allowing African Americans to assert their middle-class status.
