Karl Friedrich Thiele’s “The Hall of Stars in the Palace of the Queen of the Night” turns Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” into a vision of celestial theater: a blue, star-filled architectural fantasy designed for one of opera’s most mysterious figures.
This print was made by Karl Friedrich Thiele after the original stage designs of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Prussian architect, painter, and designer whose scenery for “The Magic Flute” became some of the most famous opera imagery of the 19th century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies the work as “Design for The Magic Flute: The Hall of Stars in the Palace of the Queen of the Night, Act 1, Scene 6,” dated 1847–49, created by Karl Friedrich Thiele after Karl Friedrich Schinkel and published by Ludwig Wilhelm Wittich. The Met notes that Schinkel’s sets were inspired by the Masonic themes of the opera’s libretto and often used a strongly Egyptian style.
The image feels part stage design, part celestial dream, and part architectural fantasy. The starry blue chamber, Egyptian-inspired columns, and dramatic symmetry make it especially suited to music rooms, studies, libraries, bedrooms, theaters, studios, opera houses, and interiors shaped by night, music, and imagination.
This print has been digitally restored from historical source material to preserve the character of the original while improving clarity, balance, and detail for modern display.

The print was slightly too large and not the dimensions I ordered which was disappointing. Other than that, it’s a beautiful print!
