William Hogarth’s 1751 “Beer Street” is a comic celebration of beer, ale, trade, and good health in Georgian London, created as the cheerful counterpoint to the ruin and misery of its companion print, “Gin Lane.”
Issued as part of Hogarth’s famous pair “Beer Street and Gin Lane,” the print was published during Britain’s 18th-century debate over cheap gin and public disorder. “Beer Street” presents a thriving London street where tradespeople, workers, and artists pause to enjoy beer, while the companion print “Gin Lane” shows addiction, poverty, neglect, and collapse. The National Galleries of Scotland notes that Hogarth used the pair to contrast the merits of beer and ale with the evils of gin, with beer understood as England’s national drink and gin eschewed as continental, and especially French.
The scene is crowded, funny, lively, and full of Hogarth’s sharp little observations: workers resting after labor, full bellies, busy trades, comic faces, and a street that feels half celebration, half satire. It is especially suited to pubs, breweries, home bars, dining rooms, studies, libraries, restaurants, taverns, and interiors shaped by history, humor, conversation, and good drink.
