John Emslie’s 1846 "Diagram of Meteorology" turns the atmosphere into a full-blown Victorian spectacle: lightning, auroras, waterspouts, rainbows, strange lights, and storm systems gathered into one richly detailed scientific landscape.
Drawn and engraved by Emslie and published in London by James Reynolds, this hand-colored diagram was created as part of a series of popular science prints meant to make complex subjects visible and engaging. In a single scene, it illustrates a wide range of meteorological and optical phenomena, including wind, cloud formations, precipitation, glaciers, halos, mock suns, mirages, zodiacal light, falling stars, and aerolites.
It is easy to see why this piece remains so compelling. Part weather chart, part scientific theater, it rewards close viewing while still making a bold impression from across the room. It is especially suited to studies, offices, classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and interiors shaped by curiosity.
This print has been digitally restored from historical source material to preserve the character of the original while improving clarity, balance, and detail for modern display.
Pairs beautifully with Emslie’s companion print "Diagram of Natural Phenomena", and is also available as part of a matching two-print set (see links below).
