William Hogarth’s 1751 “Beer Street and Gin Lane” is one of the sharpest visual satires of Georgian London, pairing a cheerful street of beer-fueled prosperity with a collapsing urban nightmare consumed by gin.
Issued as a pair, the two engravings were created during Britain’s 18th-century Gin Craze and were designed to be viewed together. “Beer Street” presents a busy, healthy, industrious London nourished by native beer and ale, while “Gin Lane” shows addiction, poverty, death, neglect, and social ruin in shocking detail. Hogarth published the prints in 1751, the same year Parliament passed the Gin Act, and they became some of the most famous images connected to the debate over gin, poverty, and public morality in Georgian Britain.
Together, the prints are funny, grim, crowded, theatrical, and brutally observant. They work as bar art, pub decor, British history prints, and conversation pieces for anyone who likes their wall art with a little bite. The pair is especially suited to home bars, dining rooms, studies, libraries, pubs, restaurants, cocktail rooms, and interiors shaped by history, humor, and vice.
These prints have been digitally restored from historical source material to preserve the character of the originals while improving clarity, balance, and detail for modern display.
