Behold this grand allegory of the reconciliation of North and South through the federal program of Reconstruction. Visionary in its breadth and scale, the work is a remarkable combination of religious and patriotic ideology by J.L. Giles c1867.

In this majestic work the government is represented as a colossal pavilion-like structure. It has a broad, flattened dome bearing a map of the United States, with a shallow drum displaying a frieze showing the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court, and cabinet. The drum is supported by a double system of columns--the straight, outer ones representing the state governments, and the curved inner columns the people. Above the dome is an eagle with flag and shield. The structure is literally undergoing "reconstruction." The bases of the columns of the former Confederate states are being replaced with new ones. The old bases are called "Foundations of Slavery." The new ones represent Justice, Liberty, and Education. Under the watchful supervision of the military, civilians carry the new columns into place. Below, beneath the dome, representatives of the North are reconciled with their Southern counterparts. Union generals Benjamin Butler and Ulysses S. Grant clasp hands with Confederates P. T. Beauregard and Robert E. Lee, respectively, and Horace Greeley embraces Jefferson Davis. Below in a small vignette two infants, one black and one white, lie sleeping together in baskets, while above them flies an eagle with a streamer reading ""All men are born free and equal."

The sky above is filled with a multitude of faces of American statesman, public figures, and historical characters. Joan of Arc, John Milton, Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Webster, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln, among others, are prominently featured. Flanking the group are Justice to the left and Liberty on the right. The aerial host surrounds the figure of Christ, who advises, "Do to other as you would have them do to you."

This print is a highly detailed scan of the original published plate and is truly an amazing patriotic image perfect for framing!

This image has been digitally retouched and repaired as necessary, while leaving the foxing, wear, and creases that lend to the intrigue of these old works. This giclee quality art is printed on heavyweight matte archival / acid-free museum quality stock with lightfast inks rated 100+ years. No watermark will appear on your print. The artwork is printed with a surrounding white margin (included in print size) to aid in framing/matting the print. Your purchase will ship priority mail (US) in a protective kraft tube made from 70-100% post-consumer recycled content and up to 30% secondary recycled content.

Given the nature of vintage artwork created before the standardization of print and frame sizes, this item may not conform exactly to the dimensions you choose. To allow for the odd sizing of these images they are printed approximately 2 inches smaller than the paper they are on. This way you receive a standard size, with a white surrounding border that allows for easy framing, with or without a matte.
