Behold the glory of this historic document, Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. This print features the full text issued on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." Created by J.S. Smith and copyrighted in 1890, it was printed in Cincinnati, Ohio by Henderson, Achert & Krebs Lithography Co.
