John Emslie’s “Diagram of Meteorology” and “Diagram of Natural Phenomena” make a striking Victorian science print set, pairing the drama of the atmosphere with the forces that shape the Earth below.
Drawn and engraved by Emslie and published in London by James Reynolds, these hand-colored scientific diagrams were created as part of a series of popular teaching prints made to turn complex subjects into vivid, memorable images.
“Diagram of Meteorology” was published in 1846 and illustrates atmospheric phenomena including cloud formations, waterspouts, auroras, rainbows, halos, mirages, mock suns, falling stars, and aerolites.
“Diagram of Natural Phenomena” was published in 1852 and shows the principal causes of geological change on the Earth’s surface, including volcanoes, earthquakes, tidal action, erosion, icebergs, and the movement of rock and land.
Together, the two prints tell a larger story: weather above, geology below, and the restless natural forces that Victorian science tried to name, number, and explain. The pair works beautifully in studies, offices, classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and interiors shaped by curiosity.
These prints have been digitally restored from historical source material to preserve the character of the originals while improving clarity, balance, and detail for modern display.

Shipping was very timely, and the seller was great and followed up on the order after it was placed rather than just shipping it! The prints are beautiful, and would definitely buy again!
