Orlando Ferguson’s 1893 “Map of the Square and Stationary Earth” is one of the strangest and most fascinating American world maps of the 19th century: a flat-earth cosmological diagram mixing geography, biblical argument, satire, and visual spectacle.

Published in Hot Springs, South Dakota, the map carries the full title “Map of the Square and Stationary Earth,” followed by the claim that four hundred Bible passages condemn “the Globe Theory” and that the map is “the Bible map of the world.” The Library of Congress identifies the work as an 1893 map by Orlando Ferguson and L.H. Everts & Co., and preserves it in the Geography and Map Division.

The map is not a conventional world map; it is a historical oddity, a religious cosmology, and a piece of visual argument. Angels stand at the four corners, continents sit within Ferguson’s unusual square-and-circular Earth design, and an anti-globe illustration comically depicts two men clinging to a spherical Earth hurtling through space.

This print works beautifully as antique map wall art, cabinet-of-curiosities decor, religious history imagery, history-of-science art, or a strange conversation piece for studies, libraries, offices, classrooms, map rooms, and interiors shaped by curiosity.

This print has been digitally restored from historical source material to preserve the character of the original while improving clarity, balance, and detail for modern display.
