Behold this astronomical oddity titled "Lunar Animals and Other Objects Discovered by Sir John Herschel in His Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope and Copied from Sketches in the Edinburgh Journal of Science" complete with bison, goats, unicorns, bipedal tail-less beavers, and the bat winged humanoids who built temples on the moon.

This curious print is an illustration by Benjamin Day created for a series of articles that ran in the New York Sun relating to the "Great Moon Hoax" of 1835. The articles introduced the supposed discovery of life and civilization on the Moon; "It was one of the noble valleys at the foot of this mountain that we found the very superior species of the Vespertilio-homo (bat-men) … They were of infinitely greater personal beauty, and appeared in our eyes scarcely less lovely than the general representations of angels by the more imaginative schools of painters."

The discoveries were falsely attributed to Sir John Herschel, one of the best-known astronomers of his time. The supposed author of the articles, a Dr. Andrew Grant, turned out to be fictitious, but according to legend The Sun's circulation increased dramatically because of the hoax and established The Sun as a successful paper.
