Behold the frontispiece illustration of Paolo Santini's "Atlas Universel dressé sur les meilleures cartes modernes" [Universal Atlas based upon the best modern maps] from 1776, set in an allegorical scene of mythological figures. Four queens represent the continents as Apollo gallops across the heavens in his chariot. At center a group of adorable putti (cherubim) circle around a large globe. This work is an exquisite example of mid-eighteenth century design and engraving.
