Brooklyn Bridge Vintage Currier and Ives Wall Art

Revel in the 'ol timey delight of this historic Currier and Ives promotional print featuring "The Great East River Suspension Bridge Connecting the cities of New York and Brooklyn" from 1874.

The Brooklyn Bridge, as it would become officially known in 1915, was opened to the public in May of 1883. Six days after it's opening, rumors of it's potential collapse caused a stampede killing twelve unfortunate souls. A year later, PT Barnum quelled the fear of disaster - and simultaneously promoted his own show - by marching 21 elephants across the bridge, led by the infamous "Jumbo".

This was really all for naught as the bridge was originally designed to be six times stronger than was thought necessary. As a result, the Brooklyn Bridge is still standing at a time when many of the bridges built during the same era have either vanished into history or been replaced.
