Peter Paul Rubens’ “Tiger, Lion, and Leopard Hunt” is a roaring Baroque spectacle: horses rear, hunters twist, claws flash, and big cats collide with human force in one of the most dramatic animal hunt scenes of the 17th century.

Painted around 1615–1616, the work was part of a cycle of four exotic hunt paintings commissioned by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria, for the old Schleissheim Palace. The work was seized during the Napoleonic Wars, and is now held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes. The Rennes museum identifies the work as “Chasse au tigre” by Peter Paul Rubens, while the painting is widely known as “Tiger, Lion, and Leopard Hunt.”

Its appeal is obvious. The painting is all motion, muscle, color, and danger. Rubens turns the hunt into a theatrical collision of bodies, animals, weapons, fear, and force, making the image feel less like a quiet hunting scene and more like a Baroque storm.
