Behold the splendor of this architectural rendering of "Entree Principal du Palais du Champ de Mars" - Main Entrance of the Palace of Mars Field, at the 1878 Paris World Fair. The Palais was facing the Trocadéro, and was located on the site where the Eiffel Tower now stands. The Latin phrase "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" (Tossed by waves, but does not sink) written above the image is the motto of the City of Paris, which was housing the World Fair. The motto was particularly adapted to the 1878 political situation, since France had been through many civil upheavals and wars, and the Third Republic was a very new regime.
