This image was used on posters from 1899 to 1914 in Europe. Created by artist Koloman Moser, It was published by pocket calendar printer Carl Fromme. The design "was considered very advanced for the time, with its large scale motif and the almost complete lack of interior detail. The silhouette of the body provides a mysterious contrast to the more realistically portrayed head and hands. The stoic gaze of the woman underlines the symbolism of the design: the Norn [ancient Norse goddess of fate] with an hourglass ringed by an ouroboros symbolizes the eternal circle of life and the "running out of time". As the poster was originally used in 1899, the waning sand in the hourglass can be interpreted as the coming of the end of the century. The original poster was printed with three different colorways: yellow, red and blue.
